| Born
and raised in Mabou Coal Mines, Cape Breton Island, Peter is the fifth
born out of a family of fifteen children. Peter has been drawing and
painting for most of his life. When asked where he got his talent, Peter
always says, "My grandmother on my father’s side was a gifted
artist. She used to draw her pictures on burlap and hook rugs from these
drawings."
Mainly a self-taught artist Peter worked early on with pencil, ink and charcoals; then went on to work with oils in the 1980's while attending St. Francis Xavier University. He has done numerous landscape scenes as well as seascapes and portrait work. A fifth generation Scottish descendant, he is currently exploring his Celtic roots through his work. He designed the covers for his sister's two CD's "Lantern Burn" and "Home". His sisters are Cape Breton vocalists, Rita and Mary Rankin. When Peter is not painting, he is commercial fishing with his brother off the coast of scenic Mabou Coal Mines. Living and working in this area which is rich in Gaelic tradition has been a great source of inspiration for Peter. |
