Art - throughout the years, the culture of Inverness County has been resplendent with the outpourings of the Artist - the piper, the weaver, the dancer, the composer, the poet, the quilter, the housebuilder, the rug-hooker, the fiddler, the songwriter. All of these artists reacted to the environment; all responded to the stimuli around them; all fulfilled the creative urge within them.

In keeping with the long and creative tradition of loving our land and our people, the four artists in this book (Peter Rankin, Jimmy Rankin, Johnny Gillis and Barrie Fraser) look with careful eyes at the subtleties of our life, our terrain, our people, our objects cherished and discarded. Their looking and drawing enhance our learning by helping us to see more deeply. Indeed this process of sharing must continue to be cultivated. For without Art, we see less, we learn less, we are less.

Each of the four whose works appear in this book is his own artist. They don't belong to a particular school - but running through this collection is a common theme - an emotional response to this world of Inverness County. Their work therefore is in keeping with our tradition of Art.

So long as the rivers do run into the sea, so long as roads rise along hay fields, so long as children sleep secure, so long as eagles survey the land, so long as nature absorbs man's mistakes, so long as objects and buildings reveal our inner lives - for that length of time will Art enable those who will see to see; for that length of time will Art encourage us to rejoice in our world. This forword then is superfluous - for the drawings are the medium. These drawings, however are not superfluous. To my mind, they are essential ingredients of life - and for that nurture, I thank Barrie, Jimmy, Johnny and Peter.
